Erik Kjersgaard's groundbreaking work on the everyday lives of Danes during the Occupation was originally published in 1980-1981 - just before his 12-episode History of Denmark hit Danish TV screens and before he became director of the Old Town in Aarhus.

In the new edition, the visuals - with hundreds of photographs from the period - has been updated. The format has been increased - from 17 x 24 cm to 21 x 29.7 cm - as has the page count, so the books are now 400 pages each.

Commenting on the reissue, Erik Kjersgaard's son, Clement Kjersgaard, said: "In terms of genre, the work was far ahead of its time - and it still is. By using contemporary sources, not least newspapers and magazines, it recreates the everyday life of the occupation. It is the war as seen from the street, the field, the cinema queue, from both sides of the grocery counter. Or, as one of the chapters is called: From the "haybox" [which stood in the kitchens of the time]. Because that's where the author himself sat, in his mother's kitchen. My father was born in 1931, so he was eight years old when the invasion took place - and thus spent much of his childhood in an occupied country and a world at war."

Clement continues: "In the last year, during the corona lockdown, we have been reminded of the question that the occupation also posed: What happens to our experience of ourselves, Denmark and life when we suddenly have a common destiny? Or are reminded that we do?"
